The story of this Volkswagen model with a sporty look appears through its name: Karmann-Ghia. This emblematic car appeared in 1955, and results from the union between a German car body designer, Karmann, creator of the Volkswagen cabriolet 4 places and the Italian design company: Ghia. From its presentation, success was at the appointment, which encouraged Volkswagen to produce more cars than expected. This sporty look model based on the chassis, the engine and the gearbox of the Beetle, was developed in cabriolet from 1957. During the 1960s, the Karmann-Ghia became the most exported car of its time, especially in the United States, where it was appreciated for its design and its reliability. In total, more than 445 000 copies of the Karmann type 14 were produced between 1955 and 1974. A variant based on the platform and the driving elements of the type 3 appeared in September 1961 but without achieving the same success. Its posterity with the VW Scirocco and then the Corrado, both resulting from the Golf, considerably contributed, with the cabriolet, to maintain the surname Karmann.
