A few tips to get your car ready for autumn

The right tyres, good lighting, a healthy battery and effective wipers: get your car ready for autumn so you can face rain, cold and slippery roads safely.

While summer is a fairly kind season for driving, autumn very often brings weather-related nuisances. The chill, the damp and the dead leaves often put vehicles and drivers in difficulty. So to get through this generally wet and potentially dangerous time of year, MECATECHNIC helps you get your car ready to hit the road safely from the start of autumn!

To drive a car that does the job and feel at ease on the road, you need to plan ahead and maintain it.

A few points deserve particular checking when the cold, damp season arrives with autumn.

With safety put to the test from the end of summer, MECATECHNIC guides you through these essential points to check:

Tyres: they are what touches the road!

Pay particular attention to the condition of your tyres. With the rain and the leaves falling from the trees, the ground cools down and becomes quite slippery from autumn onwards. As a result, fitting winter tyres, which provide optimal road holding in bad weather, can prove to be a very good choice for your safety.

These tyres, with a winter compound, are developed so as not to harden below 7°C; their siped structure gives much better grip on cold ground. So-called "4-season" tyres (Vivaldi or other brands) are an interesting alternative, especially in regions not directly affected by the "Mountain Law" (in force since 2021).

In mountain municipalities designated by prefectoral order, from 1 November to 31 March you must have either winter tyres (marked 3PMSF since 1 November 2024; M+S alone is no longer enough), or chains or snow socks in the boot. In these areas, it can be more effective to fit your car with snow tyres or winter tyres, which are even more effective, and to have another set of 4 wheels fitted with ordinary tyres, better suited to fine driving conditions. It's all a question of the weather more than the date!

Our advice: depending on your region, choose all-season tyres, or two sets of wheels, summer / winter.

See well!

Check that your wipers work properly and are in good condition.

Regularly check the level of your screenwash and gradually switch to a winter (anti-freeze) version, better suited to mud than to mosquitoes.

Check that the ventilation works well and that the cabin pollen filter is clean. Misting on the inside of a windscreen is a real nuisance in damp or cold weather. Have something to wipe it with if the misting turns stubborn (cloth or microfibre).

On cars fitted with air conditioning, it is also advisable to run it; the air con dries the air.

See well and be seen!

Also go round all the light bulbs to check they work properly. In autumn, the days get shorter and darkness comes much earlier than in summer.

Why not take the opportunity to fit your car with better lighting?

New lighting technologies let you see better at night; MECATECHNIC offers a whole range of bulbs, H4, H7, H1 etc. halogen and LED to transform your night-time experience on the road.

Our advice: be prepared with a box of spare bulbs on board your car: it isn't compulsory in France, but a blown bulb is penalised and a spare can get you out of trouble.

The battery: without it, no start!

Because a car starts well thanks to a healthy battery, you need to preserve its optimal power.

With the many charge cycles it goes through, the battery gradually loses power. When the rain, cold and darkness arrive with autumn, much more energy is demanded of the battery. Many devices in a car use electricity. The starter, the wipers, the headlights, the heating and the ventilation draw a lot of power, sometimes all at once.

A battery that is too weak will struggle to recharge on the road and will quickly let you down, especially if it has been fitted for several years.

Our advice: even if your battery is marked "maintenance-free", it is important to maintain its capacity with a trickle charger, which can double its life when your car is resting in the garage.

Classic cars deserve your full attention too as autumn approaches!

Perhaps you have the soul of a collector, or you have kept a car in the family for a long time. If you also own a classic car, or a youngtimer (between 20 and 30 years old), these tips are just as valid.

The ideal way to keep a car in good condition is to drive it regularly. So take advantage of a fine, sunny autumn day to stretch the legs of your old car and treat yourself by getting behind the wheel!
