On a Transporter, the seal between the heater box and the exhaust is an essential part of the heating system. This joint is located between the exhaust manifold and the pipe that feeds the heater, helping to prevent exhaust gases from leaking into the passenger compartment.

The heater box on a Transporter T25 uses the heat generated by the engine and exhaust to heat the vehicle interior. This system is called hot-air heating. The gasket prevents exhaust gases from entering the heating system and contaminating the air inside the vehicle.

If the gasket is worn, cracked or loose, exhaust gases can seep into the cabin, which is dangerous for passengers (carbon monoxide emissions).
