On an air-cooled VW engine, the seal between the heater box and the exhaust is an essential part of the heating system. This joint is located between the exhaust manifold and the pipe that feeds the heater, helping to prevent exhaust gas leaks into the passenger compartment.

The heater box on a Bay Window Combi uses the heat generated by the engine and exhaust to heat the interior of the vehicle. This system is called hot-air heating. The gasket prevents exhaust gases from entering the heating system and contaminating the air inside the vehicle.
