Beginner’s car care kit: shampoo, glove, wheel cleaner, brushes and microfibre cloth

Washing your car yourself is easy when you have the right products. The Mecatechnic Beginner’s Care Kit has been designed with this in mind: six complementary products, providing everything you need to clean the wheels, bodywork and plastic parts without scratching the paintwork.

Step-by-step instructions:

1. Start with the wheel rims. With the rims cool and in the shade, spray the wheel rim cleaner over the entire surface. Leave for 1 to 2 minutes without letting it dry, then brush. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. (Treat the wheel rims first to avoid splashing dirt onto the already-washed bodywork.)

2. Brush the rims. Use the large brush for the inside of the rim, the medium brush for the face and spokes, and the finest brush for the nuts and nooks and crannies. Work on the product whilst it is still damp, then rinse. Keep these brushes for the rims only.

3. Wash the bodywork. First, rinse the whole car to remove the bulk of the dirt. Dilute the Gold Class shampoo in a bucket of water according to the dosage indicated on the bottle, then work it into a lather with a jet of water.

4. Use the wash mitt. Wash panel by panel, from top to bottom, in straight lines without applying pressure (avoid circular movements). Rinse the mitt frequently in clean water and finish with the lower, dirtiest parts. Then rinse the whole car with clean water.

5. Dry without leaving streaks. Lay the microfibre cloth flat on the panel and pull it gently across the surface, or dab it. Wring it out as soon as it is saturated with water. Dry the windows and bodywork before the water leaves water marks.

6. Restore the plastics. Spray the plastic care product onto a clean, dry microfibre cloth – never directly onto the surface. Apply to clean plastic surfaces, then smooth it out. (Avoid windows, paintwork and pedals.)

Tips

• Always wash in the shade and when the bodywork is cool, to avoid water marks.

• If possible, use two buckets: one for soapy water, one for rinsing the washcloth.

• Never reuse a wash mitt or microfibre cloth that has fallen on the ground: they may have picked up grit.

• Wash microfibre cloths separately, without fabric softener.
