With the W124, Mercedes reached the pinnacle of precision. Refined aerodynamics, an ultra-rigid structure, durable engines, and a wide range of models. It devoured high-speed miles with remarkable stability. Then came the 500E, developed with Porsche: a massive V8, explosive performance, and understated appearance. A sedan capable of humiliating sports cars without raising its voice.
This middle-class sedan succeeds the W123 model and will be produced from 1984 to 1997. Just like its rival the BMW 5 series, the Mercedes E-Class will be available in Sedan type W124, Break type S124. Coupé type C124 and Cabriolet type A124 (4 seats) versions will also be added to the catalog. We will find under its imposing hood, various configurations ranging from the small 2.0 L 4-cylinder petrol engine to the large 5.0 L V8 powering the very rare and legendary 500E of 326 horsepower. This extreme version was created in collaboration with Porsche and marked the appearance of multi-valve engines (4 valves per cylinder). In addition to the already existing 4 and 5-cylinder Diesel, Mercedes offered the 6-cylinder Diesel and Turbo Diesel in 3.0 L. Throughout its long career, the W124 inaugurated numerous technical innovations: standard ABS, passenger airbag, self-locking differential, electronic traction control, 4Matic all-wheel drive. The production of the Sedan will be stopped at the end of 1995 and replaced by the Class E W210. The Break version will continue until 1996 and the Coupé and Cabriolet versions until 1997, all for more than 2,700,000 copies.
