Between the gear knob and the gearbox, the movement passes through a series of components, each of which can develop play. Understanding them in the correct order prevents you from replacing the wrong one.
A simple test: with the engine off, move the lever and see if the movement is transmitted to the gearbox. If it is lost along the way, the fault lies in the linkage.
Imprecise gear changes can make you fear the worst. In reality, on a vehicle with high mileage or one that has been left stationary for a long time, the control system is to blame far more often than the gearbox itself. The wear parts are made of rubber or engineering plastic: they harden, crack and develop play, whilst the gears themselves remain fixed.
Refurbishing a linkage involves a few parts and a morning’s work under the car. The result is immediate and dramatic in terms of the precision of the gear lever. It’s the job that delivers the most satisfaction for the least effort on an older gearbox, and it should be done before considering opening up the gearbox.
Flexible linkage parts come in two types. Rubber, true to the original, dampens vibrations and maintains comfortable gear changes: this is the choice for a faithful restoration.Urethane, which is harder, eliminates almost all play and makes the gear lever respond crisply, at the cost of slightly more vibrations being transmitted to the gear knob.
The latter is justified on a vehicle used for sport or on a set-up with a long control reach, whilst the former is for a car that you wish to restore to its original condition. It is not a question of quality, but of intended use.
Many searches focus on the function – such as ‘gearbox linkage’ – whilst the actual repair involves replacing parts one by one. If you already know which part has play, search directly for the link rod, guide bushing or bearing: you’ll find the exact part rather than an entire family of parts.
If the fault hasn’t been diagnosed, a refurbishment kit remains the most cost-effective option, as it avoids having to dismantle the system twice to replace the part adjacent to the one you’d identified.
