In a conventional ignition system, the spark is triggered by a breaker: two contacts that are mechanically separated by the ignition cam, and a capacitor that protects these contacts from arcing. This system works, but it is subject to constant wear and tear. The contacts become worn, their gap changes, and with it the ignition point.
An electronic ignition system eliminates this mechanical contact. A sensor – either a Hall-effect sensor or a magnetic sensor, depending on the system – detects the position of the crankshaft and controls a module that powers the coil. Nothing rubs, nothing becomes worn, and the ignition timing no longer drifts. This is why the benefits are particularly evident over the long term: the engine maintains the setting it has been given, rather than gradually losing it between servicing intervals.
What the electronic system does not do: it does not increase the power of a healthy engine, it does not correct an out-of-tune carburettor, and it does not compensate for play in the ignition shaft or wear on the drive pinion. If your engine is running poorly, look for the cause first; electronic ignition will come next, and it will maintain the restored setting.
Before ordering, check the condition ofthe distributor itself if you are retaining its housing: play in the shaft, wear on the bearing, or a worn drive pinion. An electronic module fitted into a distributor with play will not correct the issue, as it is the shaft that causes the ignition timing to vary. Also check the distributor cap and contact breaker, as well as the spark plug leads, which deteriorate silently over time.
After the conversion, set the ignition timing. An electronic ignition system does not come pre-set: it must be tuned using a strobe light, with the engine warm, according to the value specified for the installation. This is the step that is most often skipped, and it is this step that transforms a theoretical improvement into a real gain. Take this opportunity to check the ignition timing curve as the engine speed increases.
