The Beetle that saw the brand being born was round, with a rear-mounted, flat, air-cooled engine, in a rear-wheel-drive configuration. The Golf that had the tough job of replacing it and reigniting sales for the brand is its complete opposite! It switches to front-wheel drive, with a front, longitudinal engine cooled by water, and it's rather boxy. You change genre, and it's the young Italian designer Giugiaro who is responsible for the styling.
The marketing of this new icon will begin in September 1974 for France.
Success is immediate, and the myth is launched: an adventure that will never end!
The German Golf 1 will be produced from 1974 to 1984 for the sedans and coupé, until 1993 for the cabriolets. The "City" and the Caddy will, in their South African versions, be built on the lines up to 2009.
