A license plate light gasket is a small but important component that fits between the license plate light housing and the body of your vehicle, usually around the light located at the rear of the vehicle to illuminate the license plate. The purpose of the gasket is to seal the area and protect the light from the ingress of water, dust and moisture, which can otherwise damage electrical components.
The gasket ensures that water, dust and other external elements do not penetrate the light housing. This prevents short-circuiting and corrosion of electrical components.
Moisture can damage bulbs and other electrical components. The gasket prevents moisture from seeping in and damaging the license plate light.
License plate illumination is essential if your license plate is to be visible at night, in compliance with regulations. A good gasket ensures that this illumination functions properly in difficult climatic conditions.
The gasket offers excellent resistance to weather, UV and humidity. These materials are also flexible, allowing the gasket to adapt to the contours of the light housing.
If you're replacing a worn gasket, start by removing the old one. It may become stuck over time. Take care not to damage the light housing or bodywork during this step.
Clean the area where the gasket will be installed. Use a clean cloth to remove any dirt, rust or adhesive residues that may prevent the new gasket from adhering properly. The surface must be flat.
Position the new gasket on the license plate light housing.
Once the gasket is in place, return the license plate light to its original position and screw or re-fit the clips needed to hold the light in place.
After installation, check that the light housing is correctly secured and that the gasket provides a perfect seal. Also check that the lighting is working properly.
Choose a good-quality gasket to ensure optimum sealing and long life. A poor seal can quickly deteriorate, especially if the vehicle is exposed to harsh weather conditions.
As lighting seals can wear out over time, it's a good idea to check their condition regularly, especially if you notice lighting problems or signs of moisture inside the housing.
