Solid as a rock, precise as a blade. The E34 embodies BMW's maturity. A rigorous 5 Series, expressive 6-cylinder engines, a formidable M5. Crisp steering, natural balance, mechanical endurance. No showboating. Just a sedan built for spirited driving and long journeys. Still respected for its overall coherence.
Launched in 1988, the BMW 5 Series E34 is larger, more comfortable and more aerodynamic than its predecessor. In terms of engines, only 1 4-cylinder unit remained in the catalogue: the 113 hp of the 518i. For the rest, BMW offered 5 6-cylinder units ranging from 129 to 211 hp. Only one diesel version was available from the start, the 115bhp 524td. In 1992, the range was extended with the arrival of the Touring estate version, which offered a rare elegance for this type of bodywork. The same year, BMW introduced a new, more powerful diesel engine, the 525tds with 143bhp, and in 1993, the old L6 block from the early 1970s was replaced by a large V8, powering the 530i and 540i. Two sporty versions of the 5 Series E34 were available from 1989, the famous M5 with 315 hp and then 340 hp, as well as the Alpina B10 BiTurbo equipped with a 360 hp L6! Production of this third-generation BMW 5 Series ended in 1996.
