On 7 March 1966, the symbolic date of its 50th anniversary, BMW launched its new 1600-2 model, powered by the M10 four-cylinder engine developing 1573 cc and 85 hp. In 1967, at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the 1600-2, also known as the 1600ti, came out with 105 bhp, compared with 85 bhp for the 1600-2. BMW announced the release of a more powerful version with twin carburettors in March 1968. The 2002ti thus had 120 horsepower. In 1971, a new body was added to the range. The 2002 touring was designed by Giovanni Michelotti. The rear section of the saloon was 12 cm shorter and the boot was fitted with the hatchback system. The same year saw the launch of the 1802, a model replacing the 2002ti with a 2-litre engine increasing power to 130bhp. The success of the BMW 1502, 1602, 1802 and 2002 is still phenomenal today and continues to enthral collectors.
