It was in the fall of 1983, in Germany, that this new version of the Golf was presented. More imposing, it was greeted somewhat coldly by the public who criticized its move upmarket. The first Golf 2 GTI disappoints aficionados, since in 8 valves, it does not progress in power (still 112cv) while it has gained weight. However, she quickly returned to success and the versions multiplied.
An even sportier variant completed the picture in 1985: the GTI 16S (16 valves and 139hp). A few limited versions will also come in the following years, including the Golf Match 16S (1,200 units), the Golf G60 Rallye (5,000 units), the Golf Country (4x4 Syncro, ancestor of the Tiguan!).
The makeover of the Golf 1 Cabriolet in 1988 will allow Volkswagen to compensate for the absence of the Golf 2 in Cabriolet. In 8 years of marketing, the Golf 2 has sold 6,301,000 units, all versions combined.
