The history of this sporty model from Volkswagen can be read in its name: Karmann-Ghia. This emblematic car appeared in 1955, resulting from the union of a German coachbuilder, Karmann, creator of the 4-seater Volkswagen convertible and the Italian design company: Ghia. From its presentation the success is with go, which pushes Volkswagen to produce more cars than what it envisaged. A sporty-looking model based on the chassis, engine and gearbox of the Beetle, it was available as a convertible from 1957. In the 1960s, the Karmann-Ghia became the most exported car of its time, particularly in the States. United States, where it is appreciated for its design and reliability. In total, more than 445,000 copies of Karmann type 14 were produced between 1955 and 1974. A variant based on the platform and the engine elements of the type 3, Type 4 will appear in September 1961 without however experiencing the same success. His descendants with the VW Scirocco then the Corrado, both from the Golf will largely contribute, with the convertibles, to perpetuate the surname Karmann.
