Heir to the Plattenwagen concept: a utility vehicle with a front platform based on a Beetle, designed by Volkswagen workers, the Combi was released in 1949 at the Wolfsburg site in Germany. Equipped with the Beetle's small 1100cc 24hp aircooled engine and a so-called self-supporting bodywork, it was quickly nicknamed Bulli. Volkswagen's Combi Split quickly enjoyed great success and was available in several body styles to adapt to all requests. It thus adopted as many names as there were variations: Bus Samba, Pick-up, double cabin, Westfalia... So much so that in 1962, the millionth VW Combi left the Hanover factory. It was in 1967 that the first generation Combi retired and gave way to the Bay Window.
