The tailgate door seal for a VW Combi is a crucial part of the tailgate door seal. It prevents water, dust and cold air from entering the cabin, while allowing the door to close tightly. This seal is particularly important for VW Combis, as the tailgate is exposed to the elements, which can lead to water ingress if the seal is worn or defective.
The main role of the gasket is to provide a seal between the tailgate and the rest of the bodywork, preventing water, dirt and moisture from entering the vehicle interior, thus protecting the passenger compartment and electrical components.
A good seal prevents moisture from accumulating in sensitive areas of the body, which can lead to rust in the long term.
The seal also contributes to the vehicle's acoustic insulation , reducing wind noise and air infiltration when the tailgate is closed.
By providing better insulation, it helps to maintain a more stable temperature inside the vehicle, especially when driving in cold weather.
Your tailgate seal is defective if water leaks into the passenger compartment after a rainstorm or vehicle wash.
Visually, there may be chafing or cracks in the seal (leaving gaps through which water can enter).
As with all rubber gaskets, the tailgate surround gasket can wear down over time. So check its condition regularly, and replace it as soon as it shows signs of cracking or deterioration, to ensure a good seal.
To replace the gasket, start by removing the old one. If the gasket is glued, you may need to use a solvent to remove any remaining glue, dirt, rust and any adhesive residues that could prevent the new gasket from adhering properly.
Take the new gasket and place it around the tailgate frame.
Once the gasket is in place, close the tailgate and check for a good seal. Make sure there are no gaps or areas where water could still seep in.
Once the seal has been installed, perform a water test to check for leaks. This can be done by watering the vehicle or exposing it to the rain.
The rubber gasket is highly resistant to weathering, extreme temperatures and wear, guaranteeing good durability.
