Before describing the strobe lamp with advance phase shift, it is useful to describe the operating principle of the ordinary setting strobe lamp (without advance phase shift).

The strobe lamp is a lamp that operates on the stroboscopic principle. Namely, a rotating part of the motor is described as stationary by reference to a very brief flash that occurs several times in synchronization with the rotation of the motor.

The part of the engine that is described as stationary using the strobe light is a timing mark that the carmaker has provided on one of the engine's rotating components, such as the fan belt pulley or the engine flywheel. There is always a fixed mark on the engine, close to the point where the moving mark passes through, which is used as a reference point for the rotating mark.

In addition to the standard lamp, the phase-shifting strobe lamp is equipped with a self-powered flash tube that is independent of the spark plug and the phase-shifting electronic circuit. In this case, the degree of ignition advance required by the vehicle can be set by means of a knob on the pistol. The flash will be triggered with a delay in relation to the spark plug ignition, and will therefore be out of phase.

The strobe light synchronizes with cylinder No. 1 spark plug and flashes every time the spark plug is lit.
