With 1.354.961 produced copies between 1975 and 1983, the BMW E21 prefigured from its launch a new BMW era. This first series succeed to the 1502, 1602, 1802 and 2002 (E10/E20) produced up to that time, and reused some motorizations. Innovative in every fields, the series 3, designed by Paul Bracq, kept the style of the series 5. It rapidly became the reference fo the compact sedans. Equipped at first with 4-cylinders M10 engines, two new motorizations, 6-cylinders in-line 2-litres with carburettor and 2.3l injected appeared from 1977, making the car far more efficient. The production of all the versions came to an end in 1982 with the arrival of the new series 3. The 315 was the only one produced one year more.
