The Z3, whose production started in autumn 95 in the USA (South Carolina), was the first successful Roadster of the German firm with almost 300,000 units sold in more than a hundred countries (297,088 units of which 279,273 Roadster and 17,815 Coupé). A great result for this vehicle designed in-house by Joji Nagashima and produced in only 36 months!
One of the reasons for this success is the wide choice of engines offered, from the 4-cylinder 1.8l to the 3.2l (not forgetting the powerful 1.9l 16S with 140hp) in the Roadster and from the 2.8l to the 3.2l in the Coupé.
Four-cylinder engines account for 50% of sales, mainly in Europe. It is by covering many segments of the market that BMW succeeded in alluring a broad clientele and will finish in apotheosis with its version "M" 3.2l Coupe or Roadster having inherited initially the engine of the M3 E36 S50 then of the M3 E46 S54.
In 2003, production was stopped completely in order to make room for its future replacement: the Z4.
