The brand's first premium compact car, the A3 8L, transposes Audi's rigorous standards onto a Volkswagen platform. With meticulous finishes, efficient turbocharged engines, and an S3 version with quattro all-wheel drive that commands genuine sporting credibility, Audi isn't aiming for flamboyance. Instead, it prioritizes perceived quality and traction as its core selling points.

Based on the same platform as its cousin (the Golf 4), the first generation of the Audi A3 appeared in 1996.

At its launch, only 2 engine options were offered, the 1.8-liter gasoline version with 125 hp, later upgraded to 150 hp with a Turbocharged 20-valve engine in 1997, and a 1.9-liter TDi diesel with 90 hp, later increased to 110 hp. Originally available as a 3-door model, Audi expanded its lineup in 1999 in response to the success of its cousin and competitor's 5-door version.

In the same year, Audi introduced a sporty version of the compact car equipped with Quattro all-wheel drive and 210 hp: the famous S3. In September 2000, the A3 underwent a minor facelift with changes to the grille and headlights to boost sales. The first generation of the A3 was well-received, offering dynamic qualities and assembly quality typically found in higher-end vehicles. Its production ended in 2003 with the arrival of the A3 8P generation.
