Porsche 924

1976 - 1988

Spare parts Porsche 924

Produced from 1976 to 1988, the 924 broke the mold: front engine, transaxle architecture, near-perfect balance. Less spectacular than a 911, but remarkably coherent. It broadened the customer base and saved Porsche during a critical period. Those who reduce it to its Audi origins forget one thing: without it, the brand would have faltered.

These 4 generations of Porsche are essentially distinguished by their design, different from that which we know of the 911, and by their design, placing their water-cooled engine in the front position. The Porsche 924, like the 914, was born of a joint project between Porsche and Volkswagen, but faced with difficult economic conditions, VW decided to focus on its consumer model, the Golf, and entrusted all development and production to Porsche. The 924 was presented in 1976, equipped with a 2.0l naturally aspirated 125hp from Audi engines. Considered too low in power, it will be equipped with a turbo, bringing the power to 170 then 177hp, and increased to 210hp in 1981 for the release of the Carrera GT version. The 924 S, which appeared in 1985, was equipped with the naturally aspirated 2.5l of the 944. The latter, the Porsche 944, was marketed from 1981. Designed on the same basis as the 924, it took up the main lines and technical characteristics, namely an engine in the front position and a gearbox at the rear (known as a transaxle), to balance the body. The 944 will be equipped with a 2.5l ranging from 163 to 250hp (944 turbo). In 1989, the 2.7l and 3.0l versions of 165hp and 211hp appeared. The 944 will be produced in approximately 163,000 copies. The third evolution after the 924 and the 944, was presented in 1991 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Bearing the name of Porsche 968, it remains in line with the 944, while adopting slightly more rounded lines. Available in coupe and convertible, it is equipped with a 3.0l engine for 240hp, associated for the first time with the tiptronic automatic gearbox. At that time, it had the largest naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine fitted to a production car, the most powerful and the most torquey in the world! Alongside these three models, a more muscular and more luxurious version was marketed from 1978 to 1995: the Porsche 928. Although its family resemblance brought it closer to its 4-cylinder siblings, it was what was under the front bonnet that made the 928 a very different car. It is indeed a V8 that Porsche has chosen to equip this version, intended mainly for the American market. The 1978 4.5l 240hp engine evolved rapidly with the release of sportier versions and thus went to 5.0l then to 5.4l and 350hp on the 928 GTS version of 1992. It was in 1995 that production of the Porsche 928 stopped, at the same time as the 968, due to an unfavorable economic context and strong competition.
