An SUV from Porsche? In 2002, it was a complete scandal. And yet. V6, V8, all-wheel drive, performance worthy of a high-performance sports car: the Cayenne redefined the market. It shocked the purists but financed the GT3, the RS, the dreams. Without it, Porsche wouldn't be the powerhouse it is today. The Cayenne didn't dilute the brand's DNA. It secured it for the future.
With the Cayenne, Porsche marks a new turning point in its history. Accustomed to small sports coupes until then, the German firm decided to produce a 4x4 SUV, very trendy at the time among mid-range and high-end manufacturers like BMW. Based on the platform of its cousin VW Touareg, the Porsche Cayenne was presented in 2002 in its first version. Five engines are then available, a V6 and four V8! Porsche's sporty SUV is quickly available in sports versions, first S of 385hp, Turbo of 500hp, Turbo S of 550hp and GTS in 2008, equipped with a 4.8l V8 of 405hp. A 240hp 3.0l V6 Diesel version completed the range in 2009 and made purists cringe. Restyled in 2007 and then in 2010, the Cayenne has managed to find a good place in the sun alongside the range of sports coupes and has undoubtedly greatly contributed to the excellent financial health of the Stuttgart firm.
