Type 3, Type 4 appeared in 1961, when Volkswagen decided to expand its range after the success of the Beetle. Based on the same idea of placing a 4-cylinder air-cooled engine in the rear position, it is offered in 3 body styles: Notchback (sedan), Fastback (Coupé) and Squareback (Break). The Type 3, Type 4 is also called VW 1500 in reference to its first displacement; this will be increased to reach 1600cc in 1965. The majority of the production of the type 3, Type 4 was made in Germany in the factories of Wolfsburg and Emden (about 1.5 million copies), a complement was also produced in Brazil.
