Launched in the summer of 1991, when the Golf 2 ended its career, the 3rd generation of Volkswagen's best seller arrived with a modernized, more rounded design.
The sports versions and the Diesels remain in the spotlight, GTI (115 and 150hp) and TDi (90 and 110hp), supported by the arrival in 1992 of the Golf VR6, equipped with a unique and bewitching compact 2800cc V6 engine which delivers 174hp, then 2900cc for 190hp in the 4-wheel-drive Syncro version. A special series of the Golf GTI was offered in 1996 on the occasion of the sports car's 20th anniversary, followed by a still very popular Diesel version, the GT TDi.
We note, with the arrival of the Golf 3, the return of the convertible, offered this time in both gasoline and diesel TDi. The young career of this Golf 3 and its 4.8 million copies sold then bring the total number of VW Golfs produced since 1974 to 17 million.
