The fourth generation of the VW Passat was produced from 1996. For the first time since the B2 model, Passat shares its platform whith its cousin, the Audi A4. The design of this new version of VW Passat was thought in order to optimize the penetration in the air, what gives to the car a very aerodynamic appearance which did not go unnoticed at that time. Four motorizations were in the catalogue : the 1.8l and 2.8l V6 petrol, and two Diesel, the 1.9l TDi and 2.5 TDi V6. This version B4 of the Passat received, during its career, many prizes such as the one of the best car of its category (1998) and the best familial car (1999). It was only in 2001 when Volkswagen decided to rejuvenate its familial model, in order to insure it another few years of commercialization.
